Burger King's unsavory new ad

According to the folks at Gawker, Burger King has a new ad campaign for a "super seven incher sandwich" that's, as one blogger wrote, quite "overtly blow-jobby." This elongated, penis-shaped burger will simply "blow your mind away"--not unlike a great blow job, the ad insinuates.

But what's sexist about the ad--and ultimately, what's most disturbing--is the image of a young woman, her mouth open in surprise and possible fear at the massive sandwich she's about to deep throat. It's obvious that this pleasurable-as-a-blow-job sandwich is marketed toward hetero men. And so the depiction of the woman--apprehensive and scared rather than intrigued and aroused--makes it seem as though she has no choice in taking this item into her mouth. Open wide, the ad seems to say to her. You might not like it, but at least the dude will. -Naomi

Glad you blogged about this, and I enjoyed your comments and Sara's comments at Forest Room 5 last night. This ad and the burger commercials really bother me. And I completely agree that the most disturbing part of the ad is the way the woman is depicted (not enjoying it, etc.). She looks very much like a Lolita with the short bangs and red lipstick. Yikes.

Nice to meet you, Courtney! I agree with you about the Lolita image. This woman has also been compared to a human blow up doll in other feminist coverage of the ad. Gross.
